From March 14th to 16th 2008, Pacifica Radio provided coverage of the historic Winter Soldier 2008 gathering in Washington, DC.
National broadcast (April 22nd) on the first class action lawsuit brought by Iraq war veterans against the Department of Veterans Affairs. US vets suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder are alleging a system-wide breakdown in the way the government treats injured soldiers.

Some relevant quotes for Winter Soldiers
I express my support through the following quotes.
Abraham Lincoln:
To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.
Origen:
Conscience is the chamber of justice.
Robert G. Ingersoll:
Courage without conscience is a wild beast.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn:
Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity. Those who clearly recognize the voice of their own conscience usually recognize also the voice of justice.
Rumi:
Conventional opinion is the ruin of our souls.
Rumi:
Christian, Jew, Muslim, shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the mystery, unique and not to be judged.
Rumi:
Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.
Hafez:
When I began to see myself in all, How could I then not be kind to every being?
All is One and One is All (∞ = 1).
Support the TRUTH before our TROOPS.
Justice for ALL, not for SOME.
God bless ALL, not only AMERICA.
gratitude
Barbara Lee said she would get this into the Congressional record!
I was hoping hearing the Winter Soldiers would spark action. A woman in her 80's left me and many others ardent phone messages urging us to listen up and--especially--to take action including effective lobbying.
Thank you and kudos to everyone who made this happen including KPFA staff, supporters, and of course those who testified so movingly.
War, Peace & Evolution
Listening to the testimonies of our vets today was a very positive experience.
If Evolution is now the Evolution of Consciousness --And I believe it is --
Then Evolution requires war be elimintated --
This I was hearing today --
We've grown so much since WSI --
Back then it was like the positive direction
Of this learning was not yet understood --
Instead of anger, confusion and bitterness --
Which was understandably evident then --
Today I hear the positive affirmation that --
We are moving, We are going forward.
The survival of the planet depends on this evolution. Thank you. Thank you.
TROOPS HOME NOW
Bring all our troops HOME now....US Americans out here HAVE SPOKEN!! WE HAVE... EVERYONE I talk to... EVERYONE I KNOW HAVE SPOKEN....WE HAVE SAID WE WANT OUR TROOPS HOME NOW....THE MAJORITY DOES RULE ...that means that we the people have said over and over and over again...that we see what is going on there and WE do not approve...SO we the people will NOT stay in IRAQ of Aphfganistan....AND WE WILL BE HEARD.....
thank you
of course it would be KPFA who would air this important forum and i thank KPFA for it as well as the GIs and vets who have mustered the courage to speak the truth about what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. when i left the US almost two years ago i was so disillusioned and disappointed in my country because there was so little push back against all this imperialism and its atrocities. now i have a little hope that one of these days americans will begin to wake up to the fact that these occupations are completely immoral to begin with, but also not in our country's national interests unless you are a part of the tiny elite which benefits financially.
its only a blurb but the BBC
its only a blurb but the BBC website have a brief video on this event.

thank you from the bottom of my heart for you courage and integrity.
mena
thank you, so proud of you!
Thank you for all your hard work and putting this together. I hear you and I feel you. So so proud of you.
Winter Soldier: This is real patriotism
I am really proud of everyone who is testifying, those working to make this event possible (including my brother, a Vietnam vet), & those making sure all of us have access to the broadcast: I hope people are listening all over the world, today & into the future. This makes me proud of my country, in a way this tragic war has failed to do. And, if anyone thought Americans can't learn from our history, the voices of Iraqis, alongside American soldiers, show that we can challenge their dehumanization, even before our occupation is ended.
The massive mainstream news blackout, & the failure of so many elected officials to support the event-- even in a year when Democrats and those claiming to want us out of Iraq are doing exceptionally well-- is a real blot on our democracy. It is clear we can't wait for the big media or politicians to do the right thing, & we must keep up the pressure!
Thank you. God bless KPFA, Pacifica, and IVAW
Thank you KPFA, Pacifica, and Iraq Veterans Against The War.
Special thank you to all the courageous veterans at Winter Soldier who are telling all of us the truth about this occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Without their bravery we as a Nation would not know about the horrors they were forced to commit in this corporate sponsored war of aggression and the failures they experienced at home from the V.A.
The corporate media's continued lack of coverage of this historic and truthful event is further evidence that mainstream media is completely bought and paid for by corporations that want to perpetuate these illegal and immoral occupations.
God bless Pacifica and Iraq Veterans Against The War.
The healing of these veterans at Winter Soldier is critical because it is also the healing we all need in this Nation due to these personal and collective traumas.
Media blackout and who benefits
I was in shock and sometimes near tears from the testimonies from the panelists yesterday, and from today's presentations I would add a growing sense of outrage.
It is truly shameful the lack of mainstream coverage this remarkable, multi-day event is receiving. It is shameful the notable lack of representatives of Congress (the very ones callously sending our troops abroad should be required to attend these proceedings).
I expected C-SPAN to provide coverage (they have in the past of protests on the DC mall, though it is easier to dismiss "dirty hippies" then those troops at the tip of the spear I suppose), but when I flipped over only saw the face of Steny Hoyer going on about something other than the tragedy that is Iraq.
I was so grateful for the Iraqi-American woman/medical professional who reminded me of the anniversary of the death of Rachel Corrie (another aspect of media selectivity in that her murder conflicts with the "official narrative"). She courageously provided the linkage between the dehumanization of the Arab "other" and the Israeli agenda. She offered concrete examples of, as far as the media is concerened, the lives of Israelis, Americans, and non-Arabs counting more.
When I find myself despairing over the character of Americans, the people participating in Winter Soldier 2008 remind me that many are working tirelessly so this message gets out and that these enlightened voices are heard.
Thank you all so very much from the bottom of my heart. These broadcasts have moved me in ways I could not have even imagined. You are all an undeniable inspiration for the rest of us to keep up the fight for peace and justice.
Thank you KPFK
I'm a vietnam veteran, and former member of VVAW. Thank you for covering
WSI-2..
The reason I didnt go to the 1st WSI in 1971 is I didnt remember the
worst of what happened at that time.
It took 2 years of PTSD treatment I started in 2005 to remember what I did and
what I saw.
Being able to remember what happened, and talk about it is only my
1st step to getting the war behind me. If thats possible.
Its a good thing WSI 2 is happening now. I hope this does get talked about
and veterans of all wars can hear it and help them come to grips with reality.
I was close by when a female POW was questioned and after finding one
of my buddies I found out what I feared the most. She died after she gave
information. When I saw her with the black bag over her head she was fine.
I fired my weapon into the treeline of a free fire zone, and we killed and
wounded civilians.
I found out the circumstances we were living under during this time, and
its why I am crazy at night.
War has taken too much from me, and our country. And what do we have
to show for it?
A black wall.
Jim Hale
Vietnam 68-69
thank you
Jim, thank you for adding your testimony to those of veterans of iraq and afghanistan
Thank You
I hope you bothered to vet all these people testifying this time for actually being in the military, action reports and dates these so called victims claim.
This same shit was pulled in 1971 and they were all proved to be frauds. Some were not even in the Military let alone Vietnam. Is this what this is this time?
I hope someone bothers to check them out before they let this bile out into the media. It does far more harm than it does good.
Vietnam 68-69
why: the root cause
I hear all the time "this administration does this & this administration does that" etc but this type of heinous crimes has been committed over hundreds of years with the SAME pretexts! And people always complain AFTER the facts that they were duped!
Ever asked the question: why is it that the same population gets duped by the same pretexts to invade some other population( apparently for some loot, land, water, fluids....)?
Why is it that those who think they have the best democracy in the world, the most religious in the world, the most generous in the world, the most of everything ...keep on feeding like carnivores? And then cry afterwards?
As people are shedding these pathetic tears, those who will wage next crimes are wringing their hands for a better plan, for a better sanitization of the loot & boot, laughing away to the banks(or of whatever will be left of it). And those who will cry are oblivious of the process of how they will accommodate the next carnage.
Answer my friends is in the air: I propose that this is fundamentally a war-mongering society, every vestige of it is laid out bare, in every aspect of life, laws and mores.
I also submit that unless you ask the fundamental question of where this originates from , you will forever be crying in the wilderness & the rest of the world with less gun power will have to bear. Sadly, rest of the world is fast catching up with the knowledge that one can possess "peace with superior fire power" as reads the neighbor's license plate.
I would like to advance this further & come to conclude what has to be abandoned from the past and what has to be adopted for a radically different yet better future.........

Thank you KPFA for
Thank you KPFA for broadcasting this hearing and thanks to my husband for linking me to this site. I don't watch the news anymore because they only tell me what they want me to know and because it's not the truth. These testimonies are the true results of war. War brings sadness and death. War NEVER brings peace. Peace must come from the people. And we as a people must realize that ALL of the atrocities of this war are being done in our name, whether we like it or not. And it is breeding more hate and will bring more death and grief.
We are humans! All people that grieve and bleed and feel. We laugh at what amuses us and cry when we get sad. Soldiers civilians. "Extremists" and "pacifists." We are all people causing suffering on other people. I do not blame those that have chosen to do a ob and follow orders, but it comes to a point where we must choose between what is right and just and what our oath or career.
I commend those that are speaking out at Winter Soldier. And I apologize to the Iraqi people, at least for myself, to you.
How do we end this? How do we find the power to stop ALL the atrocities that are being done around the world.
We Have a Moral Obligation
As a first generation American, who has lost one side of my entire family (My father was a sole survivor) to war, I have experienced what the scars of war leave on families and the next generation.
We have a Moral obligation to pick up a phone, pick up a pen and contact our congressional representatives- not once but not twice- but daily-- ring their phones with our words calling for peace--for the U.S. Government to end the absurd wars- We need a global Marshall Plan --
We have a recession -a trillion dollar debt - no healthcare.
Please stop listening to the liars and the media who sell you their corporate sales pitch to keep the war industrial complex going.
Bring our soldiers home and create programs to help ALL veterans to get healthcare and healing.
Listening to these words of eyewitnesses is moving and I hope they move you to peaceful action.
Please encourage others. Read the Nuremberg Principles:

transcripts?
will transcripts of the testimonies be made available? i'm especially interested in the testimony delivered by a man whose last name, if i recall properly, is prizener. he connected the dots brilliantly. i'd like to print it all over my town, which is home to the largest marine base in the u.s..
thanks
transcriptions
they will be sent to be transcibed once the event is over. i am also editing a book of testimony which will be published by haymarket books this fall.
Awesome and heart-breaking simultaneously
My wife and I were listening this morning to the 'Racism and War: The Dehumanizaion of the Enemy' panels on KPFK 90.7 in Los Angeles.
Although we both were well aware of how brutal the occupation is and has been, we both found ourselves so upset by the testimony of low-level grunts that we had to turn the radio off repeatedly to dry our tears.
We are all Iraqis. Thank you for broadcasting this.
great journalism
I have been listening as much as I can since Friday at 6 a.m. Excellent work by Aaron and Amy (love you!) and huge thanks to the brave vets. I was around for the first "Winter Soldier" in 1971, was engaged to a conscientious objector, and finally married a guy who made himself sick with amphetamines so as not to pass his draft physical and got rated 4-F. I'm a writer with a CD called "Make Love Not War," which can be found at cdbaby.com/orvino. Here's a poem in honor of the vets. My heartfelt appreciation for KPFA, and to Aaron for starting this "war comes home" site months back.

VALENTINE M.I.A.
The world is out of kilter
because a war
wrecked the men of my generation
and ravaged us all,
58,000 names
on a black marble wall.
“Soldier’s Heart”
is an older name for
shell-shock,
post-traumatic stress; the heart
balks
at self-
destruction
night upon night
bomb blasts rocked their beds—
Want some boom-boom, mister?
Boom-boom my sister?
Like the gardens of DaNang
now meters-deep with Agent Orange,
I absorb the residue:
lovers missing, wounded and fatigued
from battle, unable to love
as they could
and a new generation inherits
sex inscribed with violence
pornographic films rev the pilots
before their bombing runs
and the infantry inhales poisoned dust
right down to each
tender scrotum
so the act of love
fathers children
with paws for hands,
Iraq to Alabama the same.
Will another woman
thirty years from now
ask where
all the men have gone?
In my unending night-
mare, the veteran returns
alive
but smelling death in my hair,
has forgotten how to kiss.
watch live
It's even more powerful if you see their faces:

I appreciate KPFA covering it, but I prefer it w/o the commentary.
Live is good...
...and you can return to warcomeshome.org for archived audio beginning now until next week. There are things said that you'll want to hear and share.
The guys that got up and
The guys that got up and spoke yesturday made it tough for me to drive home from a meeting I had in Portland OR. That meeting that I was coming from was a meeting with a universities student council. I was asking this university to start a veterans group or at least get any veterans that they can in touch with me. I am a memebr of a student veterans group, and it is amazing how much my fellow vets want to make things right, and be heard this an amazing movement that winter soldier, and Telling over here is all part of. You guys and everyone else that got up yesturday showed an amazing set of guts and I thnk you for doing it.
Thanks
I am listening to the dehumanization panel and having been moved to tears again for the I don't know how many times during the last two days..need to thank these men and women whose humanity is so clearly obvious in the testimony they are giving. I have never been through what they have been through, and could never provide such strong arguments against the war as the testimony from these veterans. Thank you for your courage, and the hope you provide that our country can recover its humanity even after such dehumanizing experiences in the example you provide. Thanks to the organizers for this amazing event, and thanks to Pacifica and KPFA for the coverage they are providing.
getting the word out
I am so impressed with the eloquence and clarity on the part of the vets, these true patriots, who have shown the courage to come forward and give their first-hand testimonies about the horrors of the war in Iraq. My deepest thanks, too, to the producers of this exceptional broadcast. These powerful and heart-breaking testimonies must be heard by a larger audience. Like the original Winter Soldier hearings in 1971, I hope these testimonies compel our elected representatives to expedite the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and begin rebuilding the country we have destroyed.
The Criminal Enterprise
None of this will make any sense to you unless you view the U.S. Government as nothing more than an 'ongoing criminal enterprise' and the two parties (Republican and Democratic) are nothing but two crime families that have the same goal which is to steal the wealth of the American public and give it o the international bankers and corporations.
The only real power it has is the power of deception.
"So loose not heart nor fall into despair for you must gain mastery if you are true in faith". Holy Quran 3:139

Mike making some good testimony.
Whoa! hearing some amazing stories.
You can bet no one making money from this "war" in Washington DC wants to hear their testimony!!!
I hope this ends up on a Pod cast and a CD.

cover this!
Don't be shy, talk to each other here.
Organise some support. And remember
theres a lot of us out here that do care!
who will pay?
Who is going to pay for these crimes against humanity? What roles the soldiers have palyed in this killing field? How are they being held accoutable? We all need to realize that we should not keep digging deep to find out how America lost the war.
this should not be about mistakes made in Iraq. This should be about colonial wars of occupation
there needs to be a serious critique of military as tool for US Imperialist expansionst polices instead of personal patriotic narratives. This is not a defensive Army. Defending your country? When was the last time you had to defend the mainland? Be real!
This is a military at the service of imperialist agenda!!!!!
hajji
This is an amazing production, thank you for airing it. Still checking the mainstream media for coverage... Haven't even seen a mention. It is easily able to be used in the classroom, around discussions of conflict, war, and social injustice. While difficult to listen to, the panels on dehumanization and racism are crucial. I am glad the definition of 'hajji' was provided, in this last panel - the twisted conversion of the highest honor into an insult linked with this atrocious war and occupation.
loss of our best and brightest
This is the true parallel between Iraq and Vietnam - another generation of young Americans forever traumatized by the things they were forced to do in the false belief they were 'serving their country'. To hear your program where it is clear the horrors are all occurring again, fully forty years later - to another generation of our best and brightest - is truly disheartening... The members of your panel are incredibly brave to tell their stories - and are now - truly serving their country...
Lots of us in support of our vets
and listening on the web.
good luck and thanks for giving us a chance to listen.
hosts
To the hosts:
I appreciate your efforts, but please, please, try not to fall into the classis trap of feeling obliged to sound "professional"......the last thing we all need is to hear this riveting testimony followed by detached commentary from the hosts...there is absolutely nothing "professional" about that....we need to hear sadness and rage and compassion in the voices of the hosts....if they have become numbed to it all, (as Aimee Allison herself readily stated, without seeming to realize that this is a fault) then the hosts should feature one more host who can keep in touch with his feelings...Do you want an example?...Blaise Bonpaine is one person who reflects humanity and anger and compassion at times, without losing his cool.....
Really, it would be better to hear no commentary at all...the emotion that comes through when the soldiers speak should not disappear when commentary comes on....better to get absolute novices in their to host who would show emotion in their voice...hearing hosts crying would be totally appropriate.....the sound of sobs would say all that needs to be said...

Peace
I have been anti war since I was in high school, went to the May Day demonstrations against Viet Nam War in Washington and have continued to demonstrate and protest wars all these years later, I am sorry that it appears people never learn from the horror and folly of war. Thanks for this show it is great to hear people who have experienced this first hand come to the places these guys have, I am sorry they have had to experience these horrors to arrive at this place I want to commend them for coming forth, I just hope the people who need to hear this get to being that our mainstream press has ignored all of this Peace
Where is everyone else?
How this blog does not already have thousands of comments is shocking and scary. This is one of the most important events in our nation's history. Where is everyone?
We are in deep shit. With a horrible education system, deteriorating economy, just so many things... countless kids look to give their lives meaning, see the little commercial, go from "white boy" to hero by doing some cool bullshit. The US military is not only a gun-ho tribal entity due to the nature of man, it is an economic cancer that is destroying our country at the rate of 1 trillion per year. Little do americans know that when you join the military you are simply surrendering your freedom to do what our elected ideologues want. In the case of Bush: “My administration has a job to do…We will rid the world of the evil-doers.” “This will be a monumental struggle of good versus evil. But good will prevail.”
Everyone who puts 5 minutes of effort will know that this was was a purely ideological war. We are biologically no different than the germans and russians, just as susceptible to patriotic tribalism.
This is absolutely
This is absolutely remarkable! Thank you for providing a platform to get this information out.
There are already many
There are already many websites out there depicting the testimony given as "lies". Keep up the truth telling!
Testimony is heart wrenching
Absolutely heart wrenching. This is criminal. Who is going to pay for these crimes against humanity?
The Americans destroyed birth certificates in Fallujah? Kill babies? This is reprehensible.
Thank you for your reporting, but would you please interview the soldiers and ask them if they feel remorse for what they've done?
These crime are still being committed as we hear this testimony.
I'm enlisting in the Marines
I'm enlisting in the Marines after high school and this doesn't change my mind a bit.
To the young man/woman who's enlisting in the marines
Thank you for you decision to serve! It took alot of guts to say that here, given the nature of this blog. You have my respect. I'll keep you in my prayers.
Respectully,

This testimony does not
This testimony does not dishonour those who have been killed. It is for them, and it is for all of us. It's for our survival, our morality, our sacred honor, our families, our ability to be healthy and happy, our ability to live in peace.
These soldiers are our heroes, and if you listen to the testimony, you will see and hear the love and respect they have for their fellow soldiers, including those who have died, those who are still friends, those who have done bad things, and those who haven't.
Don't listen if you don't want to, but do so at your own peril.
enlist
ISnt it illegal to be in an illegal war?? and to fight in an illegal war?
Congress Washington
So is the testimony here going to be heard in Washington and Congress? And if so when? And when will SOMETHING ACTUALLY BE DONE in WASHINGTON TO BRING OUR TROOPS HOME..WE WANT TO KNOW WHEN !!!..WE WANT IT SOONER NOT LATER!
Congress and
Congress and Washington..WORK for us...NOT US FOR THEM..they work for us.. we will have our voices heard and SOMETHING DONE...Not all talk from the people who WORK FOR US ie Congresswoman Lee
they dont have a choice BUT
they dont have a choice BUT to hear this testimomy ... they work for us..
Not Meant To
Changing minds is an individuals option, but if you're really joining it should explain to you what to expect to see and understand if you're sent into Theater, a War of Choice, Not Need!

Winter Soldier should be broadcast by the Mainstream Media
I have to say thank you to KPFA and every patriotic soldier telling their true account of what happened in Iraq.I am disappointed that major newspapers,ABC and other mainsteam media outlets are not giving this wide spread coverage.Every young American thinking about enlisting should be watching this event.
Are these men still proud of
Are these men still proud of their country and their service even though they had to endure such events?
